When despicable Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio was indicted in 2007 on federal charges of ignoring a judge’s orders to stop racial profiling, many people thought at long last, this man would finally get his comeuppance. Read more: Jim Larkin | Angel.co and Village Voice Media | Wikipedia
Donald Trump put all that to a halt after he pardoned Arpaio, assuring that he wouldn’t see one day inside prison. The ruling was formally validated by U.S. Judge Susan Bolton.
Two Arizona newsmen Jim Larkin and Michael Lacey weren’t very surprised. Trump and his buddy Arpaio have been in lock step for years. When Trump drove the “Birther” bus, Arpaio happily rode shotgun. The lie, invented by individuals of the right-wing fringe, which accuses President Barack Obama of being born in Kenya, is still being pushed by Arpaio to this day.
Larkin and Lacey have a much deeper and darker chapter in their lives when it comes to dealing with the worst sheriff in America. Larkin and Lacey, former owners of the Phoenix New Times spent well over a decade exposing Arpaio for the corrupt and vile human being he is.
In 2011, both men made front page news when they were arrested by Arpaio for telling the truth. The thin-skinned sheriff had just about all he could take. So he had members of his elite goon squad whisk the men away from their in the dead of night and hold them in jail.
Arpaio was and is a horrible person for sure. Some of his most despicable acts while serving as sheriff include racial profiling, the constant harassment of Hispanic people, questionable arrests, countless unexplained deaths in his jails, tortures and forcing inmates to stay in the notorious tent city, where temperatures could reach 120 degrees. And that’s just the beginning.
There were many questions about missing jail funds, sex crimes against children that were never addressed. But his zeal of targeting Latinos led to his ultimate downfall. The Melendez vs. Arpaio class action lawsuit is what really exposed Arpaio’s racist playbook.
“Sadly, he probably wouldn’t have served a day in jail anyway had Trump not stepped in,” according to Lacey. “It just shows how the justice system has failed people.”
Arpaio leaves behind a legacy of pure evil. He ignored court orders, tortured people and other equally despicable things and he’s not being held accountable, says Lacey.
But Larkin and Lacy know the former sheriff better than most.
The Arizona State University drop-outs built a newspaper due to their outrage over the Kent State killings. The executives sold the conglomerate in 2013. Incidentally, they also won a $3.75 million lawsuit against Arpaio and Maricopa County.
Instead of pocketing the money, the duo used it to establish the Frotera Fund. An organization to help promote migrant rights around the state of Arizona.
Learn more about Michael Lacey Jim Larkin:
Michael Lacey is what you might call ‘a mathematician’s mathematician.’ He has written several articles for prestigious mathematics-related publications. He has received many mathematics-related awards and he has been a full professor at Georgia Institute of Technology since 2001. Besides his responsibilities as a professor, he mentors pre and post doctoral students. Read more: Michael Lacey | Wikipedia and Michael Lacey |Math Alliance
He received his doctoral degree from The University of Illinois – Urbana Campus in 1987 at age 28 and his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas in Austin in 1981.
In 1996, he and Christoph Thiele of Christian-Albrechts-Universität, Kiel, received the Salem award which started in 1968 and is given annually to promising young mathematicians. He has since then won many more awards centering on his mathematics interests.
His current areas of research are Harmonic Analysis and Probability. Harmonic Analysis is the study of repeating patterns combined with the Fournier principle which uses trigonometry to represent recurrent, wave-like functions. His other research interest is Probability which is the study of how likely an event is to occur. The event is measured as a percentage of the numerical value of zero to one with zero having no probability and one having one hundred percent probability.
He is featured as part of the Mathematics Genealogy Project. This web-based project is the result of a mathematics student’s desire to know who mentored his mentor.
As Michael Lacey mentored and continues to mentor many students, it is not surprising that he would be included in the project.
I’m sure Mr. Lacey’s legacy of mathematical study will inspire many future mathematicians.
The Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund was established a few years ago by the Phoenix-based journalists Micheal Lacey and Jim Larkin.
The Frontera Fund has been funding and helping organizations and groups to promote and protects the human rights of minorities such as immigrants, refugees, LGBT members. The organizations that the Frontera Fund has been supporting also provide undocumented individuals with legal representation, medical attention, and more.
The Frontera Fund has been supporting the organization of DACA since Lacey and Larkin established it. Earlier this year it was made clear that DACA will no longer be in operation. The devastating news sent a wave of horror through more than 800 000 people across the United States of America as there are nearly one million immigrants under the protection of DACA.
The organization of DACA has been carrying great importance both for immigrants and for the United States. The youth under the protection of DACA has been able to live in the United States to study and work in the country.
At the same time, the United States of America has been benefitting significantly from the presence of the youths. The extra million people working in the country has been bringing down the unemployment rate, and thus they have been increasing the GDP of the United States by a few billion every year.
DACA will not be around anymore because Trump decided that the United States should be ”purged” of immigrants, as he put it. He stopped DACA from operating and now nearly one million people are losing their jobs, their education, and their lives in the United States. They are facing imminent deportation as Trump refused to provide any chance to those to keep their lives in the United States. Read more: Michael Lacey | Twitter and Jim Larkin | Angel.co
As a result, the states are loosing so much money that Trump single handedly has created a new economic crisis that has began. According to experts, the prognosis is rather grim. Th United States will lose more than $400 billion the next ten years all because Trump wanted to remove immigrants from his country.
Another enormous problem that the United States is facing is in the education sector. Most of DACA youth was training to become teachers. The United States has been facing a significant shortage of teachers over the past year, or so, we are talking tens of thousands of teachers short across the states.
The teaching staff has been leaving their jobs because the government does not invest money into the profession.
This may be the first time that you have heard of the name Jim Larkin, but his is a name that you should remember. What you might have heard is this phrase, “A fair day’s work for a fair day’s pay.” Jim Larkin used it often.
Jim Larkin was originally from Ireland where he created the Irish Transport and General Workers’ Union. While he didn’t have much in the way of education, as someone who worked hard throughout his younger years, he realized that many of his fellow workers and he, himself, were paid unfairly.
He also felt that working conditions weren’t fair and thus he decided to join the NUDL, which taught him a lot about unions.
He led many strikes in his time, but one of the biggest and most important ones was the one that became known as the Dublin Lockout in 1913. It took months and hundreds of thousands of workers joined the strike, but the result was exactly what they wanted—fair employment. Jim Larkin went through a lot in his lifetime, from being convicted as a criminal in the U.S.-for his involvement and plans to fight the British and being accused of being a communist-and then being deported back to his country three years later.
He was passionate about what he believed in-communist or not-and never stopped working towards trying to change and improve conditions for workers in his country.
Jim Larkin was somewhat of a remarkable individual for his time with a sincere dedication and commitment to his role as an activist and with a strong belief in communism. He was known to say many deep things about how he felt about doing what he did.
Back in Ireland, he continued to organize unions and one of the highly recognized ones from his return was the Workers’ Union of Ireland.
Despite what many considered to be a highly controversial and prolific career, Jim Larkin still had time to marry and start a family, raising four children. He never stopped working towards a better Ireland and a better world and kept going, even until his death in 1947.
