Dr. Mark Holterman is both a well-known pediatric surgeon and a successful entrepreneur. Holterman started the Mariam Global Health Fund in order to put investors and medical innovators in the same room. The move came after 40 years of experience practicing medicine in the United States and Canada. Over his career, Holterman has performed thousands of surgeries on children all over the country. He is known as one of the best pediatric surgeons in the United States as well as an astute businessman with a heart for the needy.
Holterman is a graduate of Yale University with a degree in Biology and received his PhD and MD at the University of Virginia. He then did a 5-year residency in General Surgery at U of V followed by a 2-year Fellowship at Seattle Children’s Hospital. Holterman then became a surgery instructor at the University of Washington from 1995-1997. He was then offered a position as a researcher at the Clinical Research Institute of Montreal, where he studied Immunology.
In 1997, Holterman moved back to the Midwest and became a long-tenured professor of the University of Chicago. His wife is also a doctor and the two launched Mariam Global Health in order to provide those in less fortunate circumstances access to quality health care. The company’s motto is “Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Sustainable Happiness.”
Mariam Global Health was founded in 2012 by Holterman and he remains the company’s CEO to this day. The group focuses on the research of autoimmune diseases and stem cell research. The company helps medical startup companies that are looking for cures for autoimmune diseases, vets them, and helps find funding for further research. As a researcher at heart, Mark Holterman has a drive to find cures for some of the world’s most debilitating diseases and disorders.
