The Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin Frontera Fund has a mission to provide funding to critical organizations that fight for human, civil, immigrant and migrant rights. The fund was begun as a result of a $3.7 million settlement being awarded to journalists Michael Lacey and Jim Larkin after their wrongful arrests at the hands of former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio.
The arrests were illegal and nothing more than retaliation for the fact that Lacey and Larkin were making Arpaio’s life difficult in exposing his many scandals. The fund provides money to important organizations like the American Immigration Council and Justice That Works.
The American Immigration Council is a Washinton D.C. based nonprofit organization that focuses on celebrating the immigrant history of the United States. The organization works tirelessly to help shape and reshape how Americans feel in regard to immigration and provide education and international exchange programs.
The American Immigration Council also teaches American citizens about the huge contributions that immigrants have made to the United States in the past and the present. Read more: Jim Larkin | Twitter and Michael Lacey | Crunchbase
The council has legal and policy programs that promote humane immigration policies and work to achieve justice for immigrants.
American Immigration Council communications director Wendy Feliz states that the organization is unique because of its in-depth knowledge of immigration law. The American Immigration Lawyers Association is the organization’s sister arm.
Justice That Works is a nonprofit organization that dedicates its self to re-defining Arizona’s punitive justice system as well as empowering communities to become healthier and safer.
The organization was founded by attorney Heather Hamel who believes that the criminal justice system should be measured by how much it has improved the lives of individuals as well as how much it has uplifted and transformed communities. The state of Arizona’s prison population is one of the largest in the United States. Arizona also incarcerates more black individuals per capita than any other U.S. state. Former Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio and his department were well-known for racist actions including racial profiling and gross abuses of human rights that included sub-standard jail conditions.
Justice That Works has a team that includes immigration lawyer and radio show personality Ayensa Millan as well as Viridiana Hernandez, the policy director for the Center for Neighborhood Leadership.
In 2016 Justice That Works announced that it would open a community court in Phoenix, Arizona. Community courts have been huge successes in that area of lowering crimes rates while keeping people free from incarceration.
Another program from Justice That Works is the Redefining Safety Initiative that is being conducted in partnership with the Center for Neighborhood Leadership. The plan is to hold 50 community meetings throughout the south Phoenix and Maryvale areas. Read more: Lacey and Larkin Frontera Fund and Jim Larkin | Facebook
Justice That Works will have conversations as to how these communities can make their neighborhoods safer without having to use a punitive policing system. Justice That Works wants to see communities come up with solutions to these issues and then vote on them.
In the end, Justice That Works is striving to achieve a transformation of the justice system into something that is supportive, positive and successful.
